I've read thousands of books in my 45 years' long journey, but undoubtedly this book has the the greatest impact on me. I first read it when I was in class vi, last time read sometime in my university life. I had to narrate the story book to my younger brother/other children who could not read till that time. What a masterclass description! Every child must read it.

To those who have read, appreciated and enjoyed this book, I suggest two other novels
by Bhibhutibhushan, "Hira Manik Jole" and "Moroner Danka Baje". All three books falls on the same category, and definitely shows the authos's mastery in writing adventure novels.

The First novel, the "Hira Manik Jole", concerns with the adventures of a Bengali boy (the hreo of the Novel) and his cousin along with a Muslim seaman (Jamatullah) in the jungles of South East Asia (probably near Borneo) where his discovers an the long-forgotten ruins of an ancient Indian civilization and inside the ruins, a huge cache of jewels underground. But after they find the jewels, his cousin dies when water rushes into the underground cave (supposedly connected by a hidden passage to the sea), and the hero had to return to Calcutta without his cousin.

The second novel, "Moroner Donka Baje", describes the experiences of a young Bengali doctor and his friend who travels to war-torn China during the 1930s (I guess) to help the Chinese goverment in treating the soldiers wounded in the war with the Japanese.  The atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers (who are fighting the Chinese) as well as the experiences at the actual battles are vividly described.

I read these novels about 25 years ago when i was a university student. Immensely enjoyed  them, but i have lost the book, unfortunately.

I suggest you also read them, and share your experieences. Thanks.

I loved this book very much - particularly the imaginative description. However this book is very ill researched and makes quite a mess of the geography of Africa. For example it places the imaginary diamond-mine somewhere in the Richtersveld mountains (situated in NW South Africa), to reach which, one must cross  the Kalahari desert if one starts from Uganda. But at the end the protagonist travels 600 miles from this mine to the south-east to reach Salisbury (present day Harare of Zimbabwe)!! (Zimbabwe lies to the north-east of of this spot, so travelling the way the author has described, Shankar would have ended up somewhere near Port Elizabeth!!)

Similarly the author places the active volcano Oldoinyo Lengai in these mountain ranges but in reality this peak is situated somewhere to the south east of Lake Victoria, in the present day Tanzania (which is more than 3000kms away)!! There are many other geographical slips. Similarly yet another slip is placing of the Yuca trees in Africa which are native to the American continent.

But apart from these technical slips, this is an excellent book. I loved and enjoyed the spirit of the protagonist and sometimes the descriptions are so vivid that I could almost visualize the very environment. In short, this is a amazing book and is a must read. But unlike Satyajit Ray's books, please do not use thus one as an accurate factfile of the African continent.

I read it when I was in class V. And then onwards, I read it thousand of times till I started my job and have of lack of time to read it so often.Still I have the pdf version in my pendrive, laptop so that whenever I feel low I can read it.It gives yourself a boost to overcome all the difficulties comes in your way to win your target. For me, it is the best writing in adventure domain in bengali (best if you read it before you come to know about the world so much, preferably in your school days-before class IX-X).It gives a vivid idea about african wild life and the adventure of a bengali guy.I love it and I am sure if I have kid ever, he/she will read this book in his/her school days only. Its surely a masterpiece in bengali literature..

Cetainly the best literary work I have ever come across!! A masterpiece, a novel every youngster should read. I have read the book countless times, and still feel the same excitement everytime I read it.
Its difficult to believe that someone who has never been to Africa, can provide such descriptions of the continent.
This is certainly one of the most treasured gems in Bengali literature, an out of the world creation in every respect.

This was and still is one of my favorite books. I had such an effect of the book on me the first time I read it that I was mesmerized with it and I was only 12 . After all these years, now  in my sixties , I still love the book. BB was and is my favorite writer too. I bought his whole collections just to read and have this book again.

An English film made in 1990 by the name "Mountains of the Moon" that has a story line in Africa and the name resembles Chader Pahar. Not sure if the name or the story was inspired by Bibhuti babu's upanyash.

I personally an challenged when it comes to Bengali education as I never had any formal education. My father read the book to me when I was in high school. The story lingered in my mind for many years and the fond rememberences of my father's detail explanations when I would struggle in understanding. After so many years I can only say that if we Bengali's could make this poetic writing available to the rest of the world as a true masterpiece should not remain confined to a langauge or a country, it would be wonderful.

Truly amazing. The author has shown that he is equally adept in writing such amazing adventure besides masterpiece like Pather Panchali. The most surprizing thing is his amazing precise description of subsaharan african jungle where he never visited. Worth reading.
